Sunwing Flight Cancellations Leave Passengers Stranded and Frustrated
Picture this—you’re all set for your long-awaited vacation, bags packed, itinerary ready, and then, suddenly, your flight is canceled. Now imagine being stranded at an airport for days, shuffled between hotels, waiting endlessly for answers. That’s exactly what happened to hundreds of Sunwing passengers after the airline canceled all southbound flights from Toronto Pearson on February 19 and 20.
Sunwing claims the move was necessary to bring back stranded passengers from destinations like Punta Cana, where many have been stuck for days due to severe weather disruptions and operational issues. But for affected travelers, the cancellations have turned their dream vacations into a logistical nightmare.
One of those passengers, Rose Latendresse, has been waiting to return to Canada with her husband for four days. Speaking from the airport in Punta Cana, she described the exhausting cycle of being transported back and forth between the hotel and the airport, waiting in long lines, and dealing with overcrowded conditions. At one point, she even witnessed an elderly man pass out due to the stress and exhaustion.

The situation at Pearson hasn’t been any better. The airport was already dealing with disruptions following a Delta Air Lines crash that forced a full shutdown on Monday. Although the wreckage has been cleared, two runways remain closed as investigations continue. Sunwing insists that the chaos at Pearson has been a major factor in their flight cancellations.
Understandably, travelers are outraged. Many, like Latendresse, feel abandoned. “We’re old,” she said, exasperated. “We can’t be getting up at 2:30 a.m., waiting all day, and wondering, are we sleeping on the beach?”
To address the situation, Sunwing has promised full refunds within 21 business days for affected travelers. However, for those stuck abroad, the frustration goes beyond money. Long nights with little sleep, uncertainty about accommodations, and the overall stress of the ordeal have left many demanding better treatment.
Meanwhile, Sunwing continues to point to weather issues, crew shortages, and hotel availability as the reasons for the delays. The airline insists that canceling outgoing flights was the only way to prioritize bringing stranded passengers home.
But that explanation doesn’t sit well with everyone. Some passengers question why other airlines are still managing to operate while Sunwing remains in crisis mode. For now, many have taken matters into their own hands, booking flights with other airlines and demanding Sunwing cover the additional costs.
At the end of the day, travelers just want clear communication, proper support, and a little respect. Whether Sunwing can regain the trust of its customers remains to be seen.
