Suspected Car Attack in Munich Leaves Dozens Injured
A shocking incident unfolded in the heart of Munich on Thursday morning when a car plowed into a crowd, leaving at least 30 people injured, including children. The suspected attacker, a 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker, was swiftly arrested at the scene. Authorities are treating the event as a potential attack, though the exact motive remains unclear.
The incident occurred at around 10:30 AM local time at the intersection of Karlstrasse and Seidlstrasse. The crowd had gathered as part of a Verdi trade union rally during a public sector workers' strike. More than 1,500 people were marching toward the final location of their demonstration when a white Mini Cooper suddenly accelerated and rammed into them. In response, a police officer fired a shot at the vehicle before arresting the suspect. Fortunately, emergency services were already nearby due to the rally, which allowed for immediate medical assistance to the injured.
Munich’s mayor, Dieter Reiter, confirmed that several victims are in critical condition, with children among those harmed. Hospitals across the city, including a children's hospital and the Munich Red Cross Clinic, have been treating the injured. Deputy Mayor Dominik Krause expressed deep concern, calling the attack "even more heinous" because many rally participants had brought their children along.

The suspect, identified as Farhad N., has been in Germany since 2016. His asylum application had been rejected, but he was allowed to stay due to security concerns in Afghanistan. Initial reports suggested he had minor run-ins with the law but was not considered an extremist threat. Authorities have since launched a full investigation, with counter-terrorism officials now handling the case.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has vowed that the suspect will face the full force of the law. "If this was an attack, we must act decisively against possible perpetrators with all means of justice," he stated. Bavarian state premier Markus Söder echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that this incident raises serious concerns about security policies in Germany.
The attack happened just hours before the scheduled arrival of the U.S. vice president and Ukrainian president for the Munich Security Conference. However, police have stated that there is no indication of a direct link between the incident and the high-profile event.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as people screamed and ran for cover. One witness recalled that the Mini Cooper accelerated right before impact, forcefully knocking down several individuals. Debris, including a baby stroller and high-visibility jackets, was seen scattered across the street.
As the investigation continues, Germany faces renewed debate over immigration policies and security measures. The suspect is set to appear in court on Friday, with the country watching closely for further developments.
