Sydney Derby Thriller: Caceres' Late Goal Denies Wanderers Victory
What a match! The Sydney Derby never disappoints, and last night’s clash between Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers was nothing short of electric. Just when it looked like the Wanderers were about to claim their first derby win since 2023, Anthony Caceres stepped up in the dying moments to rescue a dramatic 3-3 draw for the Sky Blues at Allianz Stadium.
The game had everything—early goals, momentum swings, a brace from Zac Sapsford, and a thrilling finish deep into stoppage time. Sydney FC started strong with Patryk Klimala drawing first blood in the 7th minute, celebrating right in front of the Wanderers' vocal supporters. But their lead didn’t last long, as Sapsford equalized almost immediately, capitalizing on a spilled save.

But Sydney FC had other plans. The substitutions made all the difference, with Douglas Costa setting up Adrian Segecic for an 88th-minute goal, reigniting hope for the home side. And then, in the 97th minute, Caceres—playing his 200th game for the club—delivered the final twist, smashing in the equalizer after relentless pressure from the Sky Blues.
Wanderers coach Alen Stajcic was understandably frustrated, saying his team had done enough to win. Meanwhile, Sydney FC boss Ufuk Talay praised his side’s resilience and fighting spirit.
With this result, Sydney FC climbs to third on the ladder, while Western Sydney remains eighth, still fighting for a top-six finish. One thing’s for sure—the Sydney Derby once again lived up to the hype!
