Tragic Death at KIIT Sparks Allegations of Mistreatment Towards Nepali Students
A heartbreaking incident at KIIT University in Bhubaneswar has stirred controversy, with serious allegations surfacing regarding the mistreatment of Nepali students on campus. The issue came to light following the tragic death of Prakriti Lamsal, a third-year B.Tech student from Nepal, whose body was discovered in her hostel room on February 16, 2025. Her father, Sunil Lamsal, has accused the private university of neglecting and mistreating students from Nepal, further alleging that many were forced to vacate their hostels in the wake of his daughter’s death.
Lamsal, who arrived in Bhubaneswar for his daughter’s post-mortem at AIIMS, expressed his anguish and concern over the treatment of international students. "I have lost my daughter, and now I hear that other Nepali students have been evicted from their hostels. This is completely unacceptable. The university actively invites students from Nepal to study here, but instead of providing a safe environment, they are being mistreated," he said.

The tragic event has sparked outrage both in India and Nepal. Reports suggest that Prakriti was allegedly emotionally blackmailed and harassed by a fellow student, which may have driven her to take her own life. A complaint filed by her cousin at Infocity Police Station in Bhubaneswar claimed that a male student had been blackmailing her, possibly leading to her suicide. Authorities have since arrested one individual in connection with the case.
The situation took a further troubling turn when KIIT reportedly ordered Nepali students to vacate the campus immediately after the incident, citing security concerns. However, following criticism and protests, the university later retracted the notice and assured students they could return. Meanwhile, protests erupted in Kathmandu, with student groups demanding justice for Prakriti and accountability from the university. Even Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has addressed the issue, stating that his government is engaging with Indian authorities to seek clarity and justice.
The Odisha government has now set up a high-level fact-finding committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the student’s death. The committee includes top officials from the home department, women and child development, and higher education. The university remains under scrutiny as authorities examine allegations of misconduct, including the reported eviction of students and any potential negligence by the administration.
This tragedy has raised serious concerns about the safety and well-being of international students in Indian universities. As investigations continue, the demand for justice grows louder, with Prakriti’s grieving father hoping that no other family has to endure such a loss. "I sent my daughter here for education, not for this. We trust the government and the police to give us justice," he said. The outcome of this case could have lasting implications for the treatment of international students in Indian institutions.
