Trump and Maine Governor Clash Over Transgender Athletes: "See You in Court"
In a fiery exchange at the White House, former President Donald Trump and Maine Governor Janet Mills went head-to-head over transgender athletes’ participation in female sports. The confrontation, which took place during a meeting with Democratic and Republican governors, escalated when Trump threatened to withhold federal funding from Maine if it did not comply with his executive order banning transgender women from competing in female sports categories.
The clash began when Trump singled out Governor Mills in the room, asking, “Is Maine here, the governor of Maine?” Mills responded, “I’m here,” leading to a tense back-and-forth. Trump pressed her on whether Maine would comply with his order. Mills, standing firm, replied, “I’m complying with state and federal laws.” That’s when Trump fired back with a bold statement: “We are the federal law.”
Mills did not back down. “We’re going to follow the law,” she reiterated. Trump, in turn, issued a warning: “You’d better comply, otherwise you’re not getting any federal funding.” Without missing a beat, Mills delivered a strong response: “We’ll see you in court.” Trump, seemingly unfazed, shot back, “Good, I’ll see you in court. That should be a real easy one. And enjoy your life after governor, because I don’t think you’ll be in elected politics.”

This heated debate comes in the wake of Trump’s executive order, signed on February 6, which seeks to prevent transgender women from competing in female sports. The order gives federal agencies broad authority to enforce compliance by potentially cutting off funding to non-complying states, schools, and athletic organizations.
Maine’s response has been clear. Governor Mills, along with the state’s Attorney General Aaron Frey, has vowed to push back against Trump’s threats. “Maine will not be intimidated,” Mills stated firmly. She emphasized that if the federal government attempted to strip Maine of funding, her administration would take “all appropriate and necessary legal action” to restore it.
The Maine Principals’ Association, which oversees high school sports in the state, has also weighed in, saying it will continue to allow transgender female athletes to compete, citing the Maine Human Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination based on gender identity.
This clash is yet another chapter in the ongoing national debate over transgender rights in sports, a hot-button issue that has divided political leaders, athletic organizations, and communities across the country. While Trump argues that his policy protects the integrity of women’s sports, critics, including Mills, view it as a discriminatory attack on transgender individuals.
With legal battles looming, this showdown between Trump and Maine’s governor is far from over. If anything, it’s just getting started.
