Vancouver Surge Stun Atlanta FaZe as CDL Major 2 Qualifiers Kick Off
The Call of Duty League (CDL) is back in action, and the Stage 2 Major qualifiers have already delivered some major upsets. The biggest shocker? Atlanta FaZe, fresh off their dominant win in Major 1, stumbled in their opening match against the Vancouver Surge.
FaZe came in as the favorites, but Vancouver had other plans. The series started strong for FaZe, as they took the first map, Vault Hardpoint, with a close 250-229 victory. But that was as good as it got for them. Vancouver fired back with three straight wins—6-4 on Red Card Search and Destroy, a flawless 3-0 on Protocol Control, and a commanding 250-142 win on Protocol Hardpoint. Byron "Nastie" Plumridge was the star of the show for Surge, racking up 98 kills with a +29 K/D differential. Meanwhile, Tyler “aBeZy” Pharris led FaZe with 82 kills but only managed a +1 K/D.

It wasn’t just FaZe feeling the heat on the first day. The Los Angeles Thieves, who made it to the Major 1 finals, started their Stage 2 campaign with a dominant 3-0 sweep over the Carolina Royal Ravens. They made it look easy, winning 250-153 on Vault Hardpoint, 6-2 on Hacienda Search and Destroy, and closing it out 3-1 on Protocol Control. Daniel "Ghosty" Rothe put up 59 kills for the Thieves, while Isaiah "Gwinn" Gwinn was the lone bright spot for Carolina with 71 kills and a +14 K/D.
Boston Breach also got off to a solid start, taking down the Vegas Falcons 3-1. They started strong with a 250-199 Hardpoint win and a 6-2 Search and Destroy victory. Vegas managed to take a round in Vault Control, winning 3-2, but Boston sealed the series with a 250-180 win on Hacienda Hardpoint. Cameron “Cammy” McKilligan led the charge for Boston with a massive 108 kills and a +31 K/D, while Khalid “KiinG” Kaabi stood out for Vegas with 94 kills and a +6 K/D.
With seven qualifying matches lined up for each team before the Stage 2 Major in Dallas (March 20-23), this was just the beginning. The standings are already taking shape, with the Thieves, Breach, and Surge sitting at the top. Meanwhile, FaZe, Vegas, and Carolina will need to bounce back fast to avoid slipping too far behind.
The action continues through the weekend, with eight more matches on deck, including another big test for FaZe as they take on OpTic Texas. If their first match was any indication, this stage is going to be unpredictable. Stay tuned—CDL Major 2 is just getting started!
