Amorim Claps Back at Rooney After Manchester United's FA Cup Exit
Manchester United's FA Cup run came to a bitter end as they fell to Fulham in a dramatic penalty shootout, and the fallout has been just as intense. Manager Ruben Amorim has hit back at club legend Wayne Rooney, who labeled him "naive" for stating that United’s long-term goal is to win the Premier League. Amorim, however, is standing firm, insisting that while the journey might be long, the ambition remains unchanged.
The match itself was a tense affair. Calvin Bassey gave Fulham the lead just before halftime, only for Bruno Fernandes to level things up for United in the second half. But when it came to penalties, Fulham’s goalkeeper Bernd Leno was the hero, saving crucial spot-kicks from Victor Lindelöf and Joshua Zirkzee to send the Red Devils crashing out. As the final whistle blew, the disappointment inside Old Trafford was clear, with United fans left frustrated by another missed opportunity in what has been a difficult season.

Wayne Rooney, working as a pundit for the BBC, didn’t hold back in his criticism. He suggested Amorim was being unrealistic in targeting a Premier League title anytime soon, considering United’s current struggles. “I think it’s a little naive to say they’re looking to win the Premier League because from where they are now, they’re a long way off that,” Rooney remarked. He emphasized that managers in today’s game don’t get unlimited time, and Amorim should be focusing on short-term improvements first.
But Amorim wasn’t having any of it. In his post-match interview, the 40-year-old Portuguese coach fired back, saying, “Being naive is thinking we’ll do it this season or even next. I know where we are, and I know the process takes time. But the goal remains the same—this club is built to win the Premier League.” Amorim also pointed out that as a former pundit himself, he understands how easy it is to criticize from the outside, but he remains committed to the bigger picture.
Beyond the war of words, United’s problems on the pitch are undeniable. They currently sit 14th in the league table, miles away from even a top-four finish, let alone a title challenge. Their last Premier League triumph came back in the 2012-13 season under Sir Alex Ferguson, and despite several managerial changes since then, they have failed to reclaim their dominance.
The FA Cup was seen as a potential silver lining in an otherwise tough campaign, especially with teams like Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea already out of the competition. However, Fulham’s resilience, and Leno’s brilliance in the shootout, ensured that United’s last real shot at silverware this season has now vanished. To make matters worse, they could also be dealing with an injury concern for Harry Maguire, who was forced off during the match.
As Fulham now prepares to face Crystal Palace in the quarter-finals, Manchester United is left to pick up the pieces. The pressure on Amorim is growing, but despite criticism from legends like Rooney, he remains defiant. His belief in the club’s future success is unwavering, but whether he’ll be given enough time to turn things around remains the big question.
