"Basketball Is My Life": Ben Simmons Fires Back at Critics, Proves His Passion
Ben Simmons is making it clear—he’s done listening to the doubters. Over the years, he’s faced an endless stream of criticism, from questions about his commitment to the game to relentless scrutiny over injuries. But now, playing with the Los Angeles Clippers, Simmons is speaking up and setting the record straight.
Recently, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith called out Simmons, claiming he lacks a genuine love for basketball. But Simmons isn’t having it. In a passionate response during an interview with ClutchPoints, he made one thing clear: basketball has been his entire life, and nothing can change that.
“That’s them making stuff up,” Simmons said. “Like, imagine if I just said something about someone without any facts. It doesn’t hold weight. This is what I do. I’ve been playing since I was four years old. This game is in my blood.”

“Basketball is my life. I don’t play around with my life—this is who I am,” Simmons stated. “Even if I’m not on the court, I’ll always be involved in basketball—coaching, helping the youth, giving back. This game has given me so much, and I’ll always give back to it.”
Simmons’ journey hasn’t been easy. After winning Rookie of the Year in 2018 and making three straight All-Star teams, injuries started to take a toll. A holdout, a trade to Brooklyn, and multiple back surgeries created a challenging road, leading him to this new chapter with the Clippers. But through it all, Simmons remains determined to prove himself.
This season, he’s working hard to make an impact despite setbacks, averaging 6.0 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 6.5 assists per game. He knows he still has a long way to go, but for him, it’s all about putting in the work.
“For the league, it absolutely has a negative domino effect,” Simmons explained. “People just say what they want, and suddenly, it becomes a story. That’s just how the world is now.”
But he’s choosing to focus on what he can control—his game and his future. As the season progresses, Simmons isn’t letting the noise get to him. He’s locked in, ready to prove his worth, and reminding the world that his passion for basketball has never faded.
Critics will keep talking, but Simmons is done listening. His game will do the talking from here on out.
