Blue Jackets Rally in Epic Shootout Win Over Canucks
Wow, what a game! If you’re a hockey fan, you know the Columbus Blue Jackets and Vancouver Canucks just put on an absolute thriller. A back-and-forth battle that had everything—comebacks, late drama, and a wild shootout finish. And when the dust settled, the Blue Jackets clawed their way to a 7-6 shootout victory, keeping their playoff dreams alive.
This one started rough for Columbus. Less than 14 minutes into the game, they were staring at a 3-0 deficit, and it looked like Vancouver had all the momentum. Linus Karlsson, Brock Boeser, and Jake DeBrusk each found the net early, making life tough for Blue Jackets goalie Elvis Merzlikins. But Columbus wasn’t ready to roll over.

Boone Jenner, the Blue Jackets' captain, led the charge. He got the comeback started just 34 seconds into the second period, tipping in a shot from Denton Mateychuk. Kirill Marchenko followed up to make it 3-2, and Dante Fabbro capped off the rally with a slick wrist shot to even the score at 3-3. Just like that, we had a game.
But the Canucks weren’t done. Tyler Myers buried a short-handed goal, and Aatu Raty struck again, putting Vancouver up 5-3 early in the third. Columbus answered right back, though, with Mateychuk and Jenner each lighting the lamp, tying things up at 5-5. And just when it seemed like Columbus had control, Mathieu Olivier gave them their first lead at 6-5, only for Raty to strike again just 23 seconds later, forcing overtime.
Then came the shootout, where Kent Johnson stepped up and delivered the dagger, sealing the win for Columbus. Merzlikins made the key saves when it mattered most, finishing with 31 stops in a game where both teams left everything on the ice.
For Columbus, this was huge. They’re now tied with the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers for the final wild card spot in the East, sitting at 75 points. Meanwhile, Vancouver is still fighting for a wild card spot in the West, just four points behind St. Louis.
This game had it all—intensity, resilience, and highlight-reel goals. And with just a handful of games left in the season, every point is crucial. One thing’s for sure: if the Blue Jackets keep battling like this, they’re going to be a tough team to stop.
