Brisbane's Thrilling Comeback Stuns Geelong in Wet-Weather Classic

What a game at the Gabba! Brisbane Lions have done it again, pulling off another stunning comeback to defeat Geelong by nine points in a wet and wild Round 3 clash. Just like their unforgettable preliminary final comeback last season, the Lions fought back from a massive deficit to snatch victory and keep their unbeaten streak alive.

At one point, it looked like Geelong had this match wrapped up. The Cats stormed out to a commanding 32-point lead late in the second term, handling the slippery conditions with precision while Brisbane struggled to get their game going. Geelong’s quick ball movement and clean hands had the Lions on the ropes, with Patrick Dangerfield and Max Holmes leading the charge. The Cats were dominating inside 50s and looked well in control.

But then, the game flipped. As the rain eased, Brisbane found another gear. The third quarter belonged entirely to the Lions, as they held Geelong scoreless while piling on four unanswered goals. Young gun Levi Ashcroft kicked his first-ever AFL goal to ignite the comeback, followed by majors from Eric Hipwood, Logan Morris, and the electric Bruce Reville. Reville, the ‘super sub,’ was sensational, coming on late in the third and immediately making an impact with a pinpoint pass to set up a goal, then drilling one himself from beyond 50m. That put Brisbane in front for the first time all night heading into the final term.

The fourth quarter was all about sealing the deal, and the Lions did just that. Jarrod Berry put the final nail in the coffin with a crucial late goal, sending the Gabba crowd into a frenzy. Brisbane finished the night with 39 inside 50s to Geelong’s 14 in the second half—a dominant display that proved they were the superior team when it mattered most.

Hugh McCluggage and Will Ashcroft were phenomenal, racking up disposals and driving the Lions forward relentlessly. Meanwhile, co-captain Harris Andrews was rock solid in defense, leading the team with his trademark composure and intercept marking.

For Geelong, it’s a bitter pill to swallow. They looked unstoppable in the first half but simply couldn't withstand Brisbane’s second-half avalanche. Despite strong performances from Holmes, Dangerfield, and Isaac Smith, the Cats now find themselves 1-2 after three rounds.

Brisbane, on the other hand, marches on with a perfect 3-0 record, proving once again that they are never out of the contest. If there's one thing we've learned from the Lions, it's that you can never count them out—no matter how big the deficit. Another thrilling victory for the reigning premiers, and the season is only just getting started!
