Canadiens Edge Sabres in OT Thriller for Fifth Straight Win
What a game in Montreal! The Canadiens pulled off a dramatic 4-3 overtime victory against the Buffalo Sabres, extending their winning streak to five games—their longest in three years. Mike Matheson was the hero of the night, netting the game-winner just 1:21 into overtime with a slick wrist shot past James Reimer.
It was a game of momentum swings. Montreal came out flying, taking a commanding 3-0 lead early, but Buffalo clawed their way back, scoring three unanswered goals to force overtime. The Sabres' resilience made for a nail-biting finish, but in the end, the Habs found a way to seal the deal.

Nick Suzuki was everywhere on the ice, tallying a goal and three assists. He’s been on fire lately, now riding a five-game point streak with 13 points over that stretch. Suzuki wasn’t just contributing offensively; his short-handed goal in the first period was a beauty—one that had the Bell Centre rocking. Cole Caufield added his 30th goal of the season, while Juraj Slafkovsky also found the back of the net. Lane Hutson pitched in with two assists, and goaltender Sam Montembeault stood tall with 33 saves, especially in the high-pressure moments when Buffalo turned up the heat.
On the other side, Buffalo refused to go down without a fight. Alex Tuch, Tage Thompson, and Rasmus Dahlin all scored, with Dahlin delivering the dramatic game-tying goal in the final minute of regulation. But penalties cost the Sabres, as Montreal capitalized on two power plays early on, setting the tone for the game.
Despite the comeback attempt, it was Matheson who had the final say, giving the Canadiens a hard-fought victory and pushing them within a single point of a playoff spot. Up next, they hit the road for a tough test against the Edmonton Oilers. Can they keep the streak alive? We’ll find out soon!
