Canucks Face Uncertainty as Hughes Remains Day-to-Day with Injury
Big news coming out of Vancouver as the Canucks prepare for their upcoming games—Quinn Hughes, their top defenseman and team leader, remains sidelined with a lower-body injury. The injury, sustained in a tough 6-3 loss against the Seattle Kraken, has left his status uncertain, with head coach Rick Tocchet confirming that Hughes won’t be suiting up against the Anaheim Ducks.
Hughes, who won the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenseman last season, has been battling injuries for a while now. He already missed six games earlier this season due to an oblique injury, forcing him to sit out the 4 Nations Face-Off. Just three games into his return, he’s dealing with another setback—possibly a result of overcompensating for the initial injury.

The Canucks' coaching staff is being cautious with their star defenseman. Hughes returned to practice earlier this week but was only on the ice for about 15 minutes before stepping off. On game day, he wasn’t at the morning skate, and Tocchet admitted that his condition is still fluctuating daily.
"He'll get a bunch of treatment, and we'll see how it goes," Tocchet said. "Every day, it kind of changes. He feels a bit better, and then it's about whether he can get through a practice."
The big question now is how healthy Hughes needs to be before he can return. With 60 points in 50 games, leading the Canucks in both scoring and ice time (averaging over 25 minutes per game), his presence is crucial. However, Tocchet acknowledged that even if Hughes is 80% healthy, they’d love to have him in the lineup—but only if he’s capable of playing at his usual high level.
"He wasn’t himself the last couple of games, even defensively," Tocchet admitted. "If he does play, he's got to be smart about when to push and when not to. But that’s tough because he always wants to go all out—that’s what makes him such a great player."
With the Canucks fighting for playoff positioning, having Hughes back as soon as possible is a priority. But at this stage of the season, staying healthy for the long run might be even more important. Fans will have to wait and see how quickly he can recover, but one thing’s for sure—Vancouver will be holding its breath until he’s back on the ice.
