Commanders Set to Release Jonathan Allen If No Trade Partner Emerges

Big news coming out of Washington—Jonathan Allen's time with the Commanders may be coming to an end. If the team can't find a trade partner, they are reportedly prepared to release the two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle in a cost-cutting move. This isn't entirely unexpected, but it's still a major shift for the franchise.

Allen has been a key piece of Washington’s defense since he was drafted 17th overall in 2017. Over eight seasons, he’s racked up 42 sacks in 108 starts, proving to be one of the more consistent interior defensive linemen in the league. However, the financial side of football always plays a role, and Allen carries a hefty $22.3 million cap hit for 2025. By trading or releasing him before June 1, the Commanders can free up $16.3 million in cap space. His base salary of $15.5 million isn’t guaranteed, making it easier for the team to move on.

There was trade interest in Allen before. Reports indicate that the Seattle Seahawks inquired about him ahead of the 2023 trade deadline, but that was before they changed head coaches. Whether they or another team step up with an offer now remains to be seen.

One factor that could impact Allen’s market is his injury history. He missed nine games in 2024 due to a torn left pectoral muscle but managed to return for the final two regular-season games and three postseason matchups. While he's proven he can bounce back, teams may still have concerns about durability.

If Allen does get released, he won’t be on the open market for long. Talented interior defensive linemen are always in demand, and a team looking to shore up its defensive front—like the Vikings, for example—could jump at the opportunity.

For Washington, this move signals a continued shift under new GM Adam Peters, who is clearly focused on reshaping the roster. The Commanders are looking for a fresh start, and it looks like Jonathan Allen won’t be part of that future. Whether it's via trade or outright release, his time in D.C. appears to be coming to a close.
