Dylan Brown's $14M Move to Knights Sparks Debate
Dylan Brown’s blockbuster move to the Newcastle Knights has set the NRL world abuzz, and it’s easy to see why. The talented playmaker has secured an unprecedented 10-year contract worth a staggering $14 million, making it the most lucrative deal in the league’s history. But while some view it as a bold step forward for the Knights, others, including former NRL star Paul Gallen, have serious reservations about the long-term gamble.
The 24-year-old Kiwi confirmed the news on Instagram, officially ending his tenure with the Parramatta Eels at the conclusion of the 2025 season. This deal, however, hasn’t come without its critics. Gallen wasted no time in calling out Newcastle’s management, questioning whether those responsible for the decision would even be around a decade from now to face the consequences if it backfires.

“This game is brutal. Injuries, form slumps, and unexpected changes can derail even the most promising careers,” Gallen argued. “I hope Dylan Brown thrives at Newcastle, wins premierships, and proves this decision right. But I just think a 10-year deal is irresponsible. What happens if it doesn’t work?”
Despite Gallen’s skepticism, rugby league veteran and analyst Phil Gould defended the move, saying the Knights’ decision stems from the growing desperation for elite playmakers in the league. “There simply aren’t enough high-quality playmakers in the NRL,” Gould said. “You need representative-class talent to compete for premierships. Dylan Brown is a dynamic young player, and I understand why they took the gamble.”
With the deal now submitted to the NRL, Parramatta has a 10-day window to try and persuade Brown to back out, but all signs point to the Eels conceding defeat. Parramatta’s football manager, Mark O’Neill, acknowledged Brown’s talent and wished him well. “Dylan is a class player. We understand his decision, and no one can blame him for taking this opportunity for himself and his family.”
One of the most exciting prospects of this move is Brown’s potential combination with Knights’ star fullback Kalyn Ponga, who is on a deal worth $1.4 million per season until 2027. If the two click, Newcastle could become a dominant force in the league. However, critics remain wary of the risks tied to such an extensive contract.
At just 24 years old, Brown will be 35 when this deal expires in 2035. Whether this move turns out to be a masterstroke or a cautionary tale remains to be seen. But one thing is for sure—this signing has shaken up the NRL landscape, and all eyes will be on Brown as he embarks on this new chapter with the Knights.
