Edmonton Oilers Closing in on Trade for Jake Walman
Big news coming out of the NHL today—the Edmonton Oilers are working on a trade to acquire defenseman Jake Walman from the San Jose Sharks. According to reports from TSN’s Ryan Rishaug, the deal is expected to involve a conditional draft pick and a prospect heading to San Jose. While nothing is finalized just yet, sources indicate that Edmonton is willing to take on Walman’s full cap hit, using some flexibility from Evander Kane’s LTIR money to make the move possible.

Now, let’s talk about Walman. He’s currently in the second year of a three-year, $10.2 million contract, carrying an annual cap hit of $3.4 million. This season, he’s played 50 games for the Sharks, putting up solid numbers—six goals, 26 assists, and a minus-1 rating. Not bad for a defenseman. But before his time in San Jose, Walman was with the Detroit Red Wings, where he had a career-best season in 2023-24, scoring 12 goals. He originally entered the league as a third-round pick by the St. Louis Blues in 2014 and made his NHL debut with them in 2019-20.
For the Oilers, this move makes a lot of sense. They’re looking to shore up their blue line as they push for a deep playoff run, and Walman brings mobility, offensive upside, and solid two-way play. Edmonton has been on the hunt for a reliable defenseman, and if Walman can replicate his success from Detroit, he could be a great fit alongside their elite forward group.
We’ll have to wait and see when the trade becomes official, but for now, it looks like the Oilers are making a serious push to bolster their lineup. Stay tuned—this could be a key move in their Stanley Cup chase.
