Flavio Briatore’s Grand Plan to Bring Alpine Back to F1 Glory
Flavio Briatore is back in the Formula 1 world, and he has big dreams for Alpine, aiming to transform the team into world champions once again. After returning to the F1 paddock eight months ago, Briatore has wasted no time in laying out a plan to resurrect Alpine’s former glory, reminiscent of his achievements with Benetton and Renault in the 1990s and early 2000s.
At 74 years old, Briatore might look a little different than he did during his heyday, but his ambition remains just as strong as ever. The Italian tycoon’s first big move upon rejoining Alpine was to bring in new leadership to rebuild the team. Alongside Oliver Oakes as team principal, Briatore aims to instill a culture of transparency and fairness, which he believes is crucial for success. His vision involves not just fixing what’s wrong with Alpine but also attracting the right talent and sponsors to elevate the team back to the top.

Briatore’s plan is all about creating a solid foundation before moving forward. He acknowledges the importance of having a reliable team, mentioning how Benetton and Renault were successful because everyone worked together under one roof. With Alpine, Briatore sees the same potential, though he admits the current setup lacked the proper structure when he first arrived. Since then, the team has started to gain momentum, hiring key staff, improving morale, and slowly gaining more credibility in the paddock.
In terms of drivers, Briatore’s approach is equally strategic. While Pierre Gasly and Jack Doohan are the current drivers for the team, Briatore has made it clear that performance will ultimately determine who stays in the seat. Alpine is loaded with talented reserve drivers like Paul Aron, Ryo Hirakawa, and Franco Colapinto, and Briatore isn’t afraid to make a change if someone isn’t up to the task. For him, it’s about doing what’s best for the team, even if that means switching out drivers when necessary.

His sights are set on 2026, when Alpine will switch to a Mercedes engine, a crucial part of his plan to challenge for race wins and eventually the championship. By then, he believes Alpine could be ready to fight for the title, just as Renault did in the past. Briatore compares the process of building a championship team to making a movie, where the actors may change but the goal remains the same. In the past, it was Michael Schumacher with Benetton and Fernando Alonso with Renault. Now, Briatore is looking for the next "actor" to lead Alpine to victory, although he’s not yet sure who that will be.
Briatore’s confidence is evident, and his track record speaks for itself. If anyone can turn Alpine’s fortunes around, it’s the man who once orchestrated some of F1’s most successful eras.
