George Best’s Son Recalls Dramatic Pub Brawl with His Father
You won’t believe this wild story that Calum Best, the son of football legend George Best, recently shared. Imagine being just 15 years old and getting caught up in a full-on pub brawl alongside your father, one of the greatest footballers of all time. Sounds like something straight out of a movie, right? Well, for Calum, it was real life.
Speaking on Vanessa Feltz’s Channel 5 show, Calum opened up about a dramatic and chaotic night at his father’s favorite local pub, The Phene Arms in Chelsea. Back in the day, it wasn’t exactly the most glamorous spot—more of a rough-around-the-edges kind of place. But for George Best, a man of old-school Northern Irish grit, it was his go-to hangout. He'd sit in a corner, drink in hand, playing cribbage.
On this particular night, things took a serious turn. Calum recalls how an intimidating Irishman entered the bar—someone you definitely wouldn’t want to mess with. The tension in the air was thick. After playing a round of pool at another pub, Calum and his father returned to The Phene Arms. That’s when all hell broke loose.

Out of nowhere, a fight erupted between George Best, his pal, and this tough Irishman. Just as things seemed to settle, the man left—only to return moments later with reinforcements. Five people jumped out of a van and started attacking everyone in sight. Chaos ensued. The brawl was intense, and before long, the police arrived at the scene.
Calum now reflects on that night with a mix of emotions. As a teenager, he found it thrilling—a wild, action-packed story that felt like entertainment at the time. But looking back, he recognizes it as just one of the many turbulent moments that came with growing up with an alcoholic parent.
He shared other memories of his father’s struggles with alcohol, including being left alone in hotel rooms while George went on drinking binges. It wasn’t until later in life that he truly understood the toll it all took. Now, Calum is using his experiences to support others through his work with Nacoa UK, a charity dedicated to helping children of alcoholic parents.
George Best’s life was filled with brilliance on the pitch and battles off it. He played 361 games for Manchester United, earned 37 caps for Northern Ireland, and was regarded as one of football’s greatest talents. But his off-field struggles were just as well known, ultimately leading to his passing in 2005 due to complications from alcoholism.
Calum’s story is a raw and honest look at the realities of living with a famous yet troubled father. Despite the challenges, he remains proud of his dad, honoring his legacy while also raising awareness about the impact of addiction on families. His message is clear: it’s not just about the iconic footballer—it’s about the everyday people affected by alcoholism, and the importance of breaking the stigma around it.
