Grand Canyon Dominates Home Invitational as Playoff Decides Individual Medalist
Let’s talk about an exciting showdown at the Grand Canyon University Invitational, where the home team, Grand Canyon University, put on a dominant performance to clinch the team title in spectacular fashion.
The Lopes made it clear from the start that they were the team to beat, firing rounds of 280, 281, and 279, finishing with an impressive 12-under total. They entered the final round with a solid six-shot lead, but instead of just holding on, they doubled their advantage, cruising to a 13-stroke victory over runner-up New Mexico State.

One of the biggest highlights of the tournament was the thrilling battle for the individual title. Graduate student Tommaso Zorzetto led the way for Grand Canyon, finishing at 9-under with rounds of 69, 66, and 66. He lit up the back nine in the final round, draining clutch birdies and capping off his stellar performance with a dramatic 10-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to force a playoff against CSU Fullerton’s Tegan Andrews.
What followed was an intense endurance test. Shot after shot, hole after hole, neither player backed down. After six extra holes of head-to-head golf, both players were finally declared co-champions—a well-earned title for two players who refused to break under pressure.
GCU’s depth was on full display throughout the tournament. The team placed five players inside the top 10, proving their collective strength. Junior Josh McCabe, playing as an individual, was one of just two golfers to shoot under par in every round, finishing tied for fourth at 4-under. Freshman Matthew Diehl followed up his recent win at the Desert Mountain Outlaw with another stellar showing, tying for sixth at 3-under alongside fellow freshman Nixon Lauritzen. Senior Kiko Coelho also cracked the top 10, finishing even-par and securing a T-10 placement.
New Mexico State had a strong showing as well, placing two players in the top 10. Aidan Thomas finished tied for fourth at 4-under, while redshirt senior Alexandre Baudin secured a T-10 finish at even par.
This year’s Grand Canyon Invitational wasn’t just another tournament—it was a showcase of resilience, clutch performances, and team dominance. Grand Canyon University defended their home turf in style, and with the level of talent displayed, it’s safe to say we can expect even more fireworks from this squad in the future!
