Heartbreak in Toronto: Golden Wheat Bakery Closes After 32 Years

It’s the end of an era for Toronto’s Little Italy. After more than three decades of serving the community with fresh-baked bread, mouthwatering Portuguese tarts, and custom cakes made with love, Golden Wheat Bakery has shut its doors for good. The closure came suddenly, leaving loyal customers in shock, with only a day's notice before the beloved bakery at 652 College Street closed down permanently.

The reason? A staggering rent increase that made it impossible for the family-owned business to continue operating. Like many small businesses in Toronto, Golden Wheat was feeling the weight of rising costs, but the inability to negotiate a sustainable lease renewal was the final blow. Despite trying every possible option to keep their doors open, the owners had to make the heartbreaking decision to close.

For those who have been visiting Golden Wheat for years, the news is devastating. Regulars flooded social media with messages of sorrow and disbelief, calling the closure “heartbreaking” and a huge loss to College Street. Many shared fond memories of visiting the bakery with their families, savoring its warm, comforting treats, and experiencing the kindness of the staff, who always worked with the motto: “Be happy, make somebody happy.”

In their farewell message, the owners expressed their deep gratitude to the community. “It’s been an absolute pleasure serving this community. We are extremely grateful for all the support and loyalty throughout the years.” They also left a glimmer of hope, suggesting that this might not be the end forever. “We are hopeful that, sometime down the road, we may be able to reopen in a new location and continue the legacy we’ve built with all of you.”

While the College Street location has shut down, there is still a silver lining. Golden Wheat’s second location at 579 Rogers Road remains open, keeping the spirit of the bakery alive. Many longtime customers will likely make the trek there, refusing to say goodbye to a place that has meant so much to them over the years.

This closure is yet another reminder of the tough reality facing small businesses in Toronto. The rising cost of rent, combined with economic pressures, is forcing cherished local spots out of their long-standing homes. For now, the community will hold onto the memories made at Golden Wheat and hope for its return in the future.

Until then, Golden Wheat Bakery will be dearly missed.
