JK Rowling’s Latest Social Media Jab at Harry Potter Stars Sparks Controversy
JK Rowling has once again stirred up debate, seemingly taking a swipe at the three lead stars of the Harry Potter franchise—Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. The author, known for her outspoken views, responded to a social media post that asked, "What actor/actress instantly ruins a movie for you?" Her reply? "Three guesses. Sorry, but that was irresistible," followed by three laughing emojis. While she didn’t name names, it’s widely believed that she was referring to Radcliffe, Watson, and Grint, with whom she has had a public falling-out over the years.

This ongoing rift dates back to 2020 when Rowling published an essay discussing her experiences with sexual assault and expressing controversial views on transgender identity. Her comments sparked immediate backlash, with all three actors publicly distancing themselves from her stance. Radcliffe made a strong statement supporting trans rights, saying, “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people.” Watson echoed similar sentiments, asserting that “Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned.”
Their support for the transgender community put them at odds with Rowling, who later accused them of aligning with a movement that she believes undermines women’s rights. In 2024, following the release of the Cass review on gender identity services, Rowling reaffirmed her stance and hinted that reconciliation with Radcliffe and Watson was unlikely. Radcliffe, for his part, has revealed that he hasn’t had any direct contact with Rowling since their public disagreement began.
Not everyone in the Harry Potter cast has opposed Rowling. Ralph Fiennes, who played Voldemort, has defended her against online abuse, calling it "disgusting," while Helena Bonham Carter (Bellatrix Lestrange) suggested that the backlash against Rowling had become excessive.
This latest remark from Rowling adds yet another chapter to the ongoing feud. While some fans continue to support her, others believe her comments further alienate her from the very actors who helped bring Harry Potter to life on screen.
