Kara Swisher on Why Trump Keeps Elon Musk Close
Kara Swisher, a well-known journalist with years of experience covering Elon Musk, recently shared some fascinating insights into why Donald Trump continues to keep Musk in his circle. During an appearance on Inside with Jen Psaki , Swisher discussed Musk’s role in Trump’s world and how he manages to stay relevant despite growing controversies.

In other words, Musk, who is widely recognized as an alpha figure in the tech industry, is strategically positioning himself as submissive when dealing with Trump. Psaki chimed in, calling Musk a “fake beta,” to which Swisher agreed, explaining that Musk sits at the table, acts deferential, and plays along with Trump’s dominance. However, beneath the surface, there’s a more complex dynamic at play.
The relationship between Musk and Trump isn’t without tension. Swisher pointed out that many within Trump’s inner circle are privately frustrated by Musk’s close proximity to the former president. Despite their grievances, they can’t do much about it because, at this point, Trump is fully invested in Musk. The billionaire’s wealth plays a major role in why he remains in Trump’s orbit—his financial influence is too significant to ignore. According to Swisher, Musk serves as a convenient scapegoat; if Trump ever needs to shift blame for something, Musk is an easy target.
Swisher even drew a parallel between Musk’s strategy and the infamous Marvel villain Thanos. She described Musk’s approach as one of destruction and reinvention—cutting everything in half and presenting himself as the savior of humanity. It’s a dramatic comparison, but one that underscores the way Musk operates in politics and business.
Psaki also raised an interesting theory: Trump likes keeping Musk around because, at the end of the day, Musk is even more unpopular than he is. Swisher supported this idea by referencing the numerous protests against Tesla, Musk’s company, happening across the country. As long as the public’s frustration is directed at Musk, it takes some of the heat off Trump. And if the time ever comes when Trump needs to cut ties, he won’t hesitate.
It’s a fascinating take on the power dynamics at play—Trump, Musk, and their uneasy alliance. Whether Musk continues to benefit from this relationship or finds himself thrown under the bus remains to be seen.
