Kate Garraway’s Emotional Reflection on Mother’s Day as a Single Mum
Kate Garraway has opened up about the challenges of being a single mother on Mother’s Day following the heartbreaking loss of her husband, Derek Draper. The Good Morning Britain presenter shared her raw emotions about navigating motherhood alone after years of caring for Derek during his long battle with Covid-19.
Kate, who is raising her two children, Darcey and William, reflected on how dramatically life has changed since Derek’s passing. She recalled how, in the past, she would often turn to him for advice on parenting matters. Now, she finds herself juggling every role—comforter, disciplinarian, and provider—all while coping with her grief.

She candidly shared how fellow presenter Ranvir Singh, who has been a single mum for years, became her pillar of strength. “I used to be in awe of how she managed everything alone,” Kate admitted. “Now, I find myself in that position, and she’s been my guide through it all.”
On this special day, which is supposed to be about celebration and appreciation, Kate finds herself caught between cherishing her children’s love and feeling the deep absence of Derek. She spoke about how her kids still see their father’s presence in little moments. “The other day, when we miraculously got tickets at a theme park after being told they were sold out, Darcey said, ‘It’s Dad. He did this.’” Kate laughed through the bittersweet memory, acknowledging how their father’s presence still lingers in their hearts.
Despite the pain, she is grateful for the incredible women around her. Her colleagues at Good Morning Britain, including Susanna Reid, Ranvir Singh, and Charlotte Hawkins, have been an unwavering source of support. “They have lifted me up in ways I can’t describe. They just get it,” she said.
As she reflects on the day, Kate acknowledges that single parenthood is an immense challenge. “It’s like hiking through snow in flip-flops,” she said, echoing Ranvir’s words. But through the struggles, she remains resilient, finding solace in her children’s love and the support of her close friends.
While Derek’s absence is deeply felt, Kate continues to push forward, embracing the reality of being both mother and father to her children. With love, strength, and the memories of her beloved husband, she carries on—one day at a time.
