Liverpool Triumphs Over Manchester United with Historic WSL Win at Anfield
Wow, what a night at Anfield! Liverpool's Women's team finally broke their winless streak at the historic stadium, claiming a 3-1 victory over Manchester United in the Barclays Women’s Super League. This was no ordinary match—it was a statement. Under interim manager Amber Whiteley, the Reds put on a fantastic performance to secure their third consecutive win and make history at Anfield.
The game started off a bit slow, with both teams struggling to find rhythm in the early minutes. United initially looked more comfortable in possession, dictating the pace, but Liverpool’s defensive organization ensured that there were no easy chances for the visitors. A moment of danger came in the 15th minute when Fuka Nagano lost possession, allowing Celin Bizet to fire a shot from the right. However, Liverpool’s goalkeeper, Rachael Laws, was alert and managed to tip it past the post, keeping the game level.

As the match progressed, United continued to control possession, but Liverpool waited patiently for their moment. And when it came, it was breathtaking. In the 42nd minute, Olivia Smith took matters into her own hands, dribbling in from the right before smashing a low shot past Phallon Tullis-Joyce to break the deadlock. The crowd erupted as Liverpool took the lead in spectacular fashion. But they weren’t done yet. Just before halftime, they struck again. A lightning-fast counterattack saw Sam Kerr sprinting down the right, delivering a perfect pass to Nagano, who slotted home a first-time finish into the bottom left corner. From struggling to create chances to leading 2-0 at the break—Liverpool had turned the game on its head.
Manchester United came out fighting in the second half, desperate to claw their way back into the game. They came close when Leah Galton latched onto a cross from the right, but a last-ditch defensive effort from Taylor Hinds and another save from Laws kept them at bay. Liverpool, however, remained composed and waited for their opportunity to seal the deal.
That chance came in the 66th minute when Alejandra Bernabe was fouled inside the box, winning a penalty for the Reds. Up stepped Olivia Smith, in front of the famous Kop, and she made no mistake, confidently slotting the ball into the left corner while the goalkeeper dived the other way. 3-0 Liverpool, and the celebrations were in full swing!
United did manage to pull one back in the 88th minute through Maya Le Tissier, who made a strong solo run and finished past Laws. But it was too little, too late. Liverpool had already done enough to secure their historic win, finally getting that long-awaited Anfield victory in the WSL.
A massive result for Amber Whiteley and her team, who now look ahead to their next challenge against Arsenal. But for now, the Reds can savor this moment—a night where they conquered their long-standing Anfield curse and took down one of the league’s giants in style.
