Magali Picard Clarifies Her Remarks on FTQ-Construction Whistleblowers

Recently, Magali Picard, president of the FTQ (Fédération des travailleurs et travailleuses du Québec), found herself at the center of controversy after comments she made regarding whistleblowers within FTQ-Construction. In an interview with LCN, she admitted that her initial remarks were poorly expressed and required clarification.

Last month, Picard criticized those who disclosed questionable expenses within FTQ-Construction, suggesting that leaking “privileged information” to journalists was akin to a criminal act. However, she has now sought to refine her stance, explaining that her concern was more about the external pressures that may have influenced these disclosures rather than condemning whistleblowing itself. According to Picard, she believes that those who revealed the financial irregularities might have done so under coercion or undue influence.

Her remarks come amid a growing scandal that has rocked the FTQ-Construction, leading to the resignation of its director general, Éric Boisjoly. Boisjoly stepped down but refused to take responsibility for the thousands of dollars in expenses on alcohol, restaurants, and luxury car rentals, all funded by workers' contributions. Picard was quick to clarify that she had no involvement in his resignation, emphasizing that it was a personal decision made by Boisjoly and his family.

Furthermore, Picard reassured the public that the FTQ-Construction is taking concrete steps to address financial mismanagement by consulting an external accounting firm to implement best practices. While she remained uncertain about when the misused funds would be reimbursed, she assured that the organization is actively working on solutions.

Despite the controversy, Picard reaffirmed her commitment to protecting whistleblowers, stating that the FTQ represents workers who come forward to expose wrongdoing. She stressed that if the intent behind these revelations was to uphold ethical standards, she has no issue with it. However, her concern lies with the possibility that those involved were unwilling participants in a broader scheme to manipulate leadership within the organization.

This unfolding situation highlights the ongoing challenges within labor unions, balancing transparency with internal politics. As the FTQ-Construction seeks to restore credibility, all eyes will be on the measures they take to prevent future financial mismanagement while fostering a culture of integrity and accountability.
