Major Power Outage at BWI Airport Causes Chaos and Flight Delays
Hey everyone, we've got breaking news coming out of BWI-Marshall Airport today—a massive power outage has been causing all sorts of disruptions since early this morning. If you're traveling or expecting someone, you’ll want to pay close attention.
So here’s what’s happening: Around 8:30 AM, the main terminal and the hourly garage at BWI suddenly lost power. That meant long security lines, delayed flights, and even inbound flights being diverted. By 9:30 AM, the airport confirmed that many arriving planes were being rerouted. Some flights were still operating, but delays were inevitable.

Security checkpoints were affected too, which only made things worse for passengers already stuck in the terminal. Some airlines had to get creative, using air stairs to let passengers off planes because jet bridges weren’t working. It was a mess, to say the least.
Now, as of the latest updates, power is being restored bit by bit. By 9:50 AM, screening operations were back up at Checkpoint D/E, and at 11:20 AM, power had been restored to Southwest Airlines' ticket counters. But still, the effects of the outage are lingering, and people are being advised to check with their airlines before heading to the airport.
What caused all this? Well, Baltimore Gas and Electric confirmed that the outage was related to downed wires near the airport. Some reports even mentioned a fire in the area, which may have played a role in knocking out the power.
At this point, crews are still working hard to get everything fully operational again, but if you’ve got travel plans through BWI today, expect some headaches. Flight delays, long lines, and overall confusion are still very much part of the scene. So, if you’re flying out or picking someone up, definitely check the latest updates from the airport and your airline before heading out.
This story is still developing, so stay tuned for more updates.
