'Malcolm in the Middle' Revival Brings Back Classic Characters with a Surprising Change
If you grew up watching Malcolm in the Middle , then get ready for some big news—the beloved sitcom is making a comeback! That’s right, Disney+ is reviving the show, and some of the original cast members are returning to their iconic roles. Christopher Masterson and Justin Berfield are officially back as Francis and Reese, alongside Frankie Muniz reprising his role as Malcolm. Of course, we can't forget the unforgettable parents—Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek are also back as Hal and Lois, ensuring the same chaotic family dynamic we all loved.
However, there’s one major change that has fans talking—Dewey has been recast. Erik Per Sullivan, who played the mischievous and musically gifted younger brother, will not be returning. Instead, Caleb Ellsworth-Clark, known for his work in Fargo and The Expanse , will be stepping into Dewey’s shoes. While some fans may be disappointed by this news, it’s not entirely unexpected. Per Sullivan has largely stepped away from acting since Malcolm in the Middle ended in 2006 and has also been absent from past cast reunions.

The revival isn’t just bringing back familiar faces; it’s introducing some new ones, too. Anthony Timpano ( Riverdale , Nancy Drew ) will play Jamie, Malcolm’s younger brother who was introduced in the later seasons of the original series. A completely new character, Kelly, played by Vaughan Murrae, will also join the mix—hinted at in the series finale when Lois revealed she was pregnant again. Rounding out the cast is Keeley Karsten ( The Fabelmans , Hunters ), who will play Malcolm’s daughter, Leah. Like her father, she’s highly intelligent, sarcastic, and impulsive, but with a more emotional and sensitive side.
The plot of the revival revolves around Malcolm and his daughter being pulled back into family chaos when Hal and Lois demand their presence for their 40th wedding anniversary. With the same humor, dysfunction, and over-the-top family antics, the limited four-episode series is sure to bring a nostalgic yet fresh twist to the classic show.
Longtime fans will also be happy to hear that Malcolm in the Middle creator Linwood Boomer is back as a writer and executive producer. Alongside him, Bryan Cranston, Tracy Katsky, Gail Berman, and New Regency’s Arnon Milchan, Yariv Milchan, and Natalie Lehmann are all attached as executive producers. Ken Kwapis, known for his work on The Office , will direct all four episodes.
Filming is set to begin in Vancouver soon, and anticipation is already building. Whether you're a longtime fan or discovering the Wilkerson family for the first time, this revival promises to deliver the same wild, witty, and heartwarming energy that made Malcolm in the Middle such a hit. So, mark your calendars and get ready for the return of one of TV’s most unforgettable families!
