Massive Power Outage Leaves Thousands in Perth Without Electricity

Perth woke up to chaos this morning as a widespread power outage affected thousands of homes and businesses across the city. The blackout, caused by pole-top fires triggered by light rain, left around 40,000 Western Power customers without electricity, stretching from Hamilton Hill in the south to Connolly in the north.

The unexpected power cut is a result of 51 pole-top fires ignited overnight due to drizzly weather. These fires occur when light rain mixes with built-up dust and pollution on power lines, creating an electrical fault. Unfortunately, this is not the first time Perth has faced such an issue—similar incidents occurred just a few weeks ago and even back in January, causing frustration among residents and businesses alike.

Western Power crews have been working tirelessly to assess the damage and restore power. However, due to the extent of the problem, some customers may remain without electricity until Wednesday. Each damaged power pole requires four to eight hours of repair, making restoration efforts a time-consuming challenge.

Speaking on the crisis, Western Power’s Zane Christmas acknowledged the frustration of affected residents. "We understand how difficult this is—especially since it happened not too long ago. Our crews are doing everything possible to restore power as quickly as they can," he said. The utility company has deployed at least 18 crews to tackle the outages, but with so many faults to address, full restoration remains uncertain.

WA Premier Roger Cook also addressed the situation, apologizing to residents and businesses for the inconvenience. He assured the public that Western Power is investing heavily in maintenance and repairs, with about a billion dollars spent annually on the power grid. The state government continues to push for underground power solutions, which could help prevent such issues in the future.

For now, affected residents are advised to stay updated through Western Power’s outage map and prepare for potential extended downtime. As the city grapples with yet another blackout, questions remain about the long-term reliability of Perth’s electricity infrastructure.
