Michael Fassbender’s James Bond Audition – The Role That Got Away
Did you know Michael Fassbender once had a shot at playing James Bond? That’s right! Back in the early 2000s, when the Bond franchise was looking for a fresh face after Pierce Brosnan’s departure, Fassbender found himself in the mix. However, in a surprising twist, he ended up promoting someone else for the role—none other than Daniel Craig!
Speaking on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Fassbender revealed that he was in the audition phase for “Casino Royale,” the film that ultimately rebooted the Bond franchise. At the time, he wasn’t a household name, having mainly worked in TV dramas. Despite being in the running, he never made it to the final four contenders. And here’s the kicker—during his meeting with Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, he found himself talking up Daniel Craig instead of himself! He jokingly admitted, “I don’t know why I was promoting him. I should have been promoting myself!”

It turns out Fassbender wasn’t the only actor vying for the role. Henry Cavill was also a strong contender, but producers felt he was too young at the time. As for Fassbender, he humbly acknowledged that his audition wasn’t his strongest. In fact, he admitted to being “terrible” at auditions, even recalling how he botched his chance at “Mad Max: Fury Road” by arriving an hour late. Ouch!
Of course, Daniel Craig went on to redefine Bond, becoming one of the most successful 007 actors in history. His gritty, intense portrayal starting with “Casino Royale” won over fans and critics alike, proving Fassbender’s instincts were spot on.
With Craig stepping down after “No Time To Die,” the Bond franchise is once again searching for a new leading man. Could Fassbender have been the perfect choice years later? We’ll never know, but his brief brush with Bond history remains an intriguing ‘what if’ moment for fans of the franchise.
