Morez Johnson Enters Transfer Portal, Shaking Up Illinois’ Future

Big news coming out of Illinois basketball—freshman standout Morez Johnson has officially entered the transfer portal. This is a significant development for the Fighting Illini and a tough loss for the program. According to reports from 247Sports’ Travis Branham, Johnson, who was a key player in Illinois’ lineup this past season, is now exploring opportunities elsewhere.

Johnson had a solid freshman year, averaging 7.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game while playing just under 18 minutes per contest. He played in 30 of Illinois’ 35 games, even securing a starting spot in eight of them. His impact was undeniable, recording three double-doubles throughout the season and showcasing his dominance in the paint.

For Illinois fans, this is especially disappointing considering Johnson’s long-standing commitment to the program. The Riverdale, Illinois native committed to the Illini all the way back in 2021 as a high school sophomore. By the time he arrived in Champaign, he was regarded as the top player in the state and ranked among the top 30 recruits in the nation. Expectations were high, and while he delivered glimpses of his potential, his departure raises major questions about the team's future frontcourt depth.

This move also marks the second major departure from Illinois in just two days, following Carey Booth’s decision to enter the transfer portal. With both players leaving, head coach Brad Underwood and his staff will now have to reevaluate their roster and possibly dip into the portal themselves to find replacements.

With Johnson's transfer, the Illini will have some big shoes to fill. The next few weeks will be crucial as the program looks to recover from these losses and make strategic moves to keep their competitive edge. Stay tuned, because this offseason is shaping up to be a pivotal one for Illinois basketball.
