Mortal Kombat 2: The Tournament That Decides Earth's Fate
Alright, Mortal Kombat fans, it’s time to get hyped because Mortal Kombat 2 is officially on its way, and this time, it’s all about the tournament. That’s right—no more prequels, no more buildup. The real fight is here, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. If Earth’s warriors lose, Outworld takes over. Simple as that.

If you remember the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie, it was all about Shang Tsung’s underhanded attempts to take out Earth’s champions before they could even compete. Well, he failed. Now, in Mortal Kombat 2 , we finally get to see the actual tournament in action. And according to Ed Boon, the co-creator of the Mortal Kombat franchise, this is no ordinary tournament. “They keep score throughout the movie,” Boon revealed to Entertainment Weekly . “There’s a visual representation of who is winning... and there are huge consequences.” So, yeah, expect every battle to matter in a big way.
Of course, a Mortal Kombat movie wouldn’t be complete without an insane character lineup. Almost everyone from the first film is back, including Cole Young (Lewis Tan), Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada), Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim), Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Jax (Mehcad Brooks), and Raiden (Tadanobu Asano). But wait—Kano (Josh Lawson) and Kung Lao (Max Huang) are also back, despite being, well, dead. How? That remains a mystery.
Joining the fight this time are some legendary Mortal Kombat icons: Kitana (Adeline Rudolph), Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford), and, of course, the fan-favorite Johnny Cage, played by none other than Karl Urban. According to Boon, Johnny Cage’s arc is a huge part of the movie. He’s a washed-up Hollywood star suddenly thrown into the world of ultra-violent combat, and Urban is bringing his own unique take to the character. Sounds like we’re in for a fresh and exciting portrayal of the beloved fighter.
But let’s not forget what Mortal Kombat is all about—brutal, jaw-dropping fatalities. With the tournament in full swing, you can bet some of these characters won’t be making it out alive. And since this is the deciding tournament, the losses will hit hard. If Earth loses, it’s their tenth consecutive defeat, which means Outworld gains control of the planet. No pressure, right?
So, who will rise to the occasion and defend Earth? Will Johnny Cage prove himself in the ring? And how will the returning characters fit into the storyline? We won’t have to wait too long to find out— Mortal Kombat 2 is set to hit theaters on October 24, and it’s shaping up to be an absolute bloodbath. Prepare yourself. The tournament begins soon.
