Purdue Dominates McNeese to Secure Sweet 16 Spot in Indianapolis
Purdue Boilermakers are heading back to Indianapolis after a commanding 76-62 victory over McNeese State in the NCAA Tournament. From the opening tip-off, Coach Matt Painter’s team took control, never allowing McNeese a chance to mount a comeback. This victory sends Purdue to the Sweet 16 once again, further solidifying their reputation as one of the most consistent programs in March Madness.
McNeese, coming in as a potential Cinderella team, had gained attention for their athleticism and defensive prowess, but Purdue quickly shut down any hopes of an upset. The Boilermakers executed a near-flawless game plan, stifling McNeese’s offense, which typically averages around 77 points per game. However, on this stage, the Cowboys struggled, shooting below 50% from the free-throw line despite multiple opportunities to stay competitive.

The star of the night was undoubtedly Trey Kaufman-Renn. Although undersized compared to traditional post players, he showcased his dominance in the paint, dropping 22 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. McNeese tried everything—fronting him in the post, sending double teams—but nothing could slow him down. His presence also opened up opportunities for Purdue’s sharpshooters, who took full advantage. Six different players knocked down at least one three-pointer, with four of them making multiple shots from beyond the arc.
Braden Smith, Purdue’s All-American point guard, had a mixed performance. While he contributed 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists, he also struggled with turnovers, coughing up the ball eight times due to relentless full-court pressure from McNeese. If Purdue hopes to make a deeper run, they will need Smith to tighten up his ball-handling against tougher competition in the next round.
A major X-factor for Purdue was their bench. Myles Colvin, Cam Heide, and Gicarri Harris brought energy and versatility off the bench, combining for 16 points and 13 rebounds. Their ability to stretch the floor and provide a defensive spark proved crucial in maintaining Purdue’s lead throughout the game.
With this victory, Purdue advances to the Sweet 16 for the sixth time in their last eight tournament appearances—an impressive feat that underscores their dominance in recent years. Now, all eyes turn to the winner of the Gonzaga vs. Houston matchup, as that team will face the Boilermakers in what will essentially be a home-court atmosphere in Indianapolis.
For Purdue fans, the dream of a deep tournament run is alive and well. With their sights set on bigger challenges ahead, the Boilermakers will look to build on their momentum and continue their quest for a national championship. Boiler Up!
