Real Sociedad and Man United Battle to a 1-1 Draw in Europa League Clash
What a game we just witnessed in the Europa League! Manchester United took on Real Sociedad in the first leg of their last-16 tie, and it ended in a hard-fought 1-1 draw. This match had it all—big moments, drama, and plenty of talking points.
United came into this game with something to prove after their disappointing FA Cup exit last weekend. And for most of the match, they looked like the better team. The first half didn’t have much to separate the two sides, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut chances. United, however, had more control and showed more attacking intent. Sociedad, on the other hand, looked off the pace and lacked any real threat in the final third.

The breakthrough finally came in the 57th minute, and it was United’s Joshua Zirkzee who made the difference. After some brilliant play down the right, Alejandro Garnacho pulled the ball back to Zirkzee, who struck a first-time shot straight down the middle. Sociedad’s goalkeeper, Alex Remiro, was unsighted, and the ball flew into the back of the net. A deserved lead for United, and a moment of redemption for Zirkzee after his recent penalty miss against Fulham.
But just when it looked like United might take control, Sociedad were handed a lifeline in the 70th minute. A corner was swung into the box, and the ball struck Bruno Fernandes on the arm. After a VAR check, the referee pointed to the spot. Mikel Oyarzabal stepped up, sent André Onana the wrong way, and calmly slotted the penalty into the net. 1-1, and suddenly, Sociedad were back in the game.
The final 20 minutes saw both teams push for a winner, but neither side could find that extra moment of magic. United had a few half-chances through Garnacho and Rasmus Højlund, while Sociedad looked more lively after their goal. But in the end, the scoreline stayed level, and it all comes down to the second leg.
United will be frustrated not to have held onto their lead, but they’ll take confidence from their overall performance. Sociedad, meanwhile, will be relieved to have avoided defeat despite struggling for most of the game. It’s all set up for an intense second leg, and we can’t wait to see how it unfolds!
