Rep. Al Green Removed from Congress During Trump’s Speech

In a dramatic moment during President Donald Trump’s joint address to Congress, Rep. Al Green of Texas was forcibly removed from the House chamber after disrupting the speech. Green, a longtime critic of Trump, stood up early in the address, shaking his cane and shouting in protest. His actions led to chaos on the House floor, with both cheers and boos erupting from lawmakers.

House Speaker Mike Johnson quickly stepped in, reminding members of the rules and calling for order. However, Green refused to sit down, leading Johnson to order the House sergeant at arms to escort him out. As he was removed, Republican members chanted, “Nah nah nah nah, goodbye,” mocking his exit.

Outside the chamber, Green remained defiant, explaining his protest. He took issue with Trump’s claim of having a “mandate,” particularly regarding budget cuts that would impact Medicaid. Green insisted that Trump’s policies would harm the poor and that he could not sit silently while the president spoke about them. “As a person of conscience, I had to speak up,” he told reporters.

This incident was just one of many acts of protest during Trump’s speech. Members of the Democratic Women’s Caucus wore pink to oppose Trump’s policies on women and families, while others wore blue and yellow in support of Ukraine. Some Democrats held signs and paddles with messages like “SAVE MEDICAID” and “MUSK STEALS,” referring to billionaire Elon Musk’s involvement in Social Security debates. Rep. Rashida Tlaib even held up a whiteboard that read, “THAT’S A LIE.”

House Democratic leaders had previously urged their members to maintain decorum and avoid making the night about themselves. However, for Green and others, the moment proved too critical to stay silent. While his removal made headlines, it also underscored the deep divisions in Congress and the passionate opposition to Trump’s policies.
