Sam Darnold Joins the Seahawks on a $100.5M Deal
Big news out of the NFL free agency frenzy—Sam Darnold is officially the new quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks! That’s right, after trading Geno Smith to the Raiders, the Seahawks have put their faith in Darnold, locking him down with a three-year, $100.5 million contract, including $55 million guaranteed. Talk about a fresh start!

Now, let’s rewind a bit. Darnold’s journey in the NFL has been anything but smooth. Drafted third overall by the New York Jets in 2018, he was supposed to be their franchise QB. But, well, things didn’t exactly pan out. After struggling with inconsistency and a revolving door of coaching changes, the Jets moved on. Darnold then spent time with the Carolina Panthers, where he showed flashes of potential but never really took off.
Fast forward to last season, and we saw a completely different version of Sam Darnold with the Minnesota Vikings. He stepped up big time, leading the team to an impressive 14-3 record. That performance even earned him his first-ever Pro Bowl appearance. But let’s not forget—his season ended on a sour note. A disappointing loss to the Detroit Lions in the finale, followed by a rough wild-card playoff loss to the Rams, left the Vikings questioning if he was their long-term guy. In the end, they decided to move forward with second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy, opening the door for Darnold to explore new opportunities.
Enter the Seahawks. They clearly see something in Darnold and believe he can be the guy to lead them into the future. It’s a bold move, but Seattle is ready to build around him. With Darnold under center, the Seahawks are making it clear they’re aiming for success. It’ll be interesting to see how this move plays out—whether Darnold can capitalize on his resurgence or if Seattle just made a $100 million gamble. Only time will tell!
