Schools Closed as Icy Storm Hits the Maritimes
Hey everyone, we’ve got some major weather-related news coming in from Atlantic Canada today. Schools across the Maritimes are closed as a powerful ice storm moves through the region, bringing dangerous conditions, freezing rain, and even a risk of flooding.
So here’s what’s happening: A massive storm system that first hit Ontario over the weekend has now moved eastward, causing serious disruptions. Freezing rain warnings were issued early Monday for parts of New Brunswick and western Prince Edward Island. As expected, road conditions have become treacherous, leading officials to make the call to close all public schools in New Brunswick.

But that’s not all—after this icy blast, heavy rain is set to take over. Nova Scotia is now facing a significant flood risk, with rainfall warnings in place. Some areas could see as much as 60 mm of rain by the end of the day Tuesday. The combination of melting ice and heavy rain means localized flooding is very possible, particularly in low-lying areas.
If you’re in Newfoundland, you’re not in the clear yet either. Freezing rain, snow, and ice pellets are making their way into the region as we speak. By early Tuesday, precipitation will transition into rain, but not before causing some tricky travel conditions.
Officials are urging everyone to stay safe—roads and sidewalks are slick, and heavy downpours could lead to flash flooding. If you must head out, take extreme caution, especially on untreated surfaces. And if you’re in an area prone to flooding, be prepared.
Looking ahead, the storm will eventually move out to sea, but the cold weather won’t be leaving anytime soon. Temperatures will drop again through midweek before another system moves in later in the week, keeping this active weather pattern going into April.
Stay tuned for more updates, and if you’re affected by the closures, stay safe and stay warm!
