Severe Storms and Tornado Watch Rock Indiana, Leaving Thousands Without Power

Overnight, severe thunderstorms and tornadoes ripped through the state, bringing damaging winds, heavy rain, and widespread power outages. The storms started late Friday night, making their way through the Tri-State area and hitting Evansville hard. The National Weather Service issued multiple tornado warnings, with the worst of the system moving through the region between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. CDT. At one point, nearly 60 mph wind gusts were reported at Evansville Regional Airport, accompanied by pea-sized hail. The weather service had previously classified this as a “particularly dangerous situation,” which means long-lived and intense tornadoes were highly likely.

As of early Saturday morning, thousands of Hoosiers are waking up without power. CenterPoint Energy reported nearly 9,000 customers without electricity in the Evansville area alone, while Duke Energy’s outage map showed over 20,000 people in the dark. Across the state, more than 50,000 homes and businesses have been affected by power failures due to the high winds and damage to infrastructure. Crews are working to restore power, but it could take time given the extent of the damage.
Tornado watches and severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for several counties across Indiana, including Gibson, Pike, Warrick, Posey, Vanderburgh, and Dubois counties. Parts of eastern Indiana are still under a tornado watch until 10 a.m., so if you’re in those areas, stay alert and have a plan in place in case conditions worsen. The National Weather Service has advised everyone to take shelter in an interior room on the lowest floor of their home if a tornado warning is issued for their area.
The storm system hasn’t just affected Indiana. Reports indicate that tornadoes also touched down in parts of Illinois and Missouri before making their way here. Louisville, Kentucky, is also under a tornado watch, with heavy rain and strong winds expected throughout the morning.
