Severe Storms Threaten North Georgia and Metro Atlanta This Weekend
Hey folks, if you're in the Atlanta area or anywhere in north Georgia, you need to stay weather-aware this weekend. We’re looking at a significant and potentially dangerous weather event coming our way, and it’s something you definitely don’t want to ignore.
A powerful storm system is moving across the Southeast, bringing damaging winds, large hail, and even the risk of long-track tornadoes. This is not just a typical thunderstorm setup—we’re under a Level 4 risk for severe weather, which is pretty rare for our area. That means we’re in for a potentially serious night of storms, especially late Saturday into early Sunday morning.

Let’s break it down. Right now, storms are developing across Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. By the time we hit Saturday afternoon, things will get really active, with severe storms pushing toward Georgia. If you’re in northwest Georgia, expect the worst of it to hit by Saturday evening. For those in the Atlanta metro area, the most intense storms will likely arrive around midnight and continue overnight.
The main threats? We’re talking about straight-line winds that could hit 60 to 70+ mph, large hail up to two inches, and a very real tornado threat—especially in western Georgia. Some of these tornadoes could be strong and long-lasting. And let’s not forget the heavy rain. Some areas could see up to three inches of rainfall, leading to possible flash flooding.
So, what do you need to do? First, make sure you have multiple ways to receive weather alerts. Don’t rely on outdoor sirens—they might not wake you up if a storm rolls in overnight. Download a weather app, enable emergency alerts on your phone, or keep a NOAA weather radio handy. Second, know where to go if a tornado warning is issued. Have a designated safe place in your home, preferably an interior room on the lowest level with no windows.
Saturday might start off deceptively nice—mild temperatures, a little wind, even some sunshine in the afternoon. But don’t let your guard down. By the evening, conditions will change rapidly. If you have plans, stay updated, be flexible, and most importantly, stay safe. Keep an eye on the forecast and be ready to act if warnings are issued. This could be one of the strongest storm systems we’ve seen in a while, so let’s all be prepared.
