Severe Thunderstorm Brings Chaos to Perth, Disrupting Daily Life
Hey everyone, I hope you're staying safe because Perth has just been hit by a massive severe thunderstorm, and it's been nothing short of chaos. This storm, which rolled in earlier today, has left more than 10,000 homes and businesses without power, caused major disruptions to traffic, and even delayed flights at Perth Airport.
Let me break it down for you. A strong cold front came crashing through the city, bringing heavy rain, damaging winds, and even some hail in certain areas. The wind speeds were recorded at a staggering 113 kilometers per hour in Gooseberry Hill—enough to knock down trees, power lines, and create hazardous conditions all over the city. Authorities have already responded to at least 55 calls for help due to storm-related damage.

For those commuting, it’s been a nightmare. The Kwinana and Mitchell Freeways, along with Roe and Tonkin Highways, were gridlocked during peak hour as the storm battered the city. Flooding was reported in Midland, particularly on Lloyd Street, making the situation even worse for drivers trying to get home. With traffic lights out in some areas and road conditions deteriorating, authorities are urging people to drive cautiously—or, if possible, avoid unnecessary travel altogether.
And it’s not just the roads that have been affected. Perth Airport had to halt ground operations temporarily for safety reasons, causing delays for more than 50 flights. While planes were still able to land, passengers are now facing long wait times as the backlog clears.
Businesses haven’t been spared either. The Swan Veterinary Hospital, for instance, suffered significant damage and had to shut down immediately. Thankfully, both staff and animals are safe, but they’ve announced they’ll be closed until further notice while they assess the damage.
Weather experts say the worst may not be over yet. The Bureau of Meteorology has warned that Perth’s eastern suburbs could still experience more heavy rain and damaging winds into the evening. Some areas have already recorded between 40 to 50 millimeters of rain in just a short period, adding to the risk of flash flooding.
If you’re in an affected area, be sure to stay updated with emergency warnings, avoid flooded roads, and take all necessary precautions. Power outages could take some time to fix, so it might be a good idea to have torches, batteries, and some essentials ready just in case.
