Sharks Edge Maple Leafs in Thrilling 6-5 Shootout Victory
What a game in San Jose! The Sharks pulled off a dramatic 6-5 shootout win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, but not without some serious late-game drama. Tyler Toffoli was the star of the night, netting two goals and an assist to help propel the Sharks to victory.
San Jose looked like they had this one wrapped up, leading 5-3 with less than a minute left in regulation. But the Maple Leafs had other plans. John Tavares cut the deficit to one with just 59 seconds remaining, and then, in stunning fashion, William Nylander tied it up just 45 seconds later with his second goal of the night. Talk about a last-minute heartbreaker for the Sharks.

But San Jose didn’t let the late collapse define them. The game went to a shootout, where rookies Will Smith and Macklin Celebrini stepped up big time, scoring for the Sharks. Meanwhile, Alexandar Georgiev was clutch in net, stopping Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner to seal the win—redemption after letting in Nylander’s opening shootout attempt. Georgiev finished the night with 30 saves, a solid performance despite the late-game chaos.
Collin Graf, Alexander Wennberg, and William Eklund also found the back of the net for the Sharks. Graf, in particular, had a milestone moment, becoming the first Sharks rookie to score a short-handed goal since Tomas Plihal back in 2008. Meanwhile, Wennberg’s goal was the 100th of his career—quite the night for milestones in San Jose.
On the Leafs’ side, Matthews and Scott Laughton contributed second-period goals, while Joseph Woll matched Georgiev with 30 saves of his own. But in the end, it wasn’t enough to overcome the Sharks’ resilience.
This loss stings for Toronto as they continue their California road trip, now having dropped seven of their last 12 games. They’ll look to bounce back against the Kings on Saturday, while the Sharks will try to build off this big win when they host the New York Rangers.
Hockey fans, this was one for the books—late-game heroics, a shootout showdown, and a hard-fought battle on both sides. If this is the kind of energy we’re getting down the stretch, buckle up because the season’s only heating up!
