Shocking Gondola Fall at Kicking Horse Resort Leaves Skiers Stranded
Imagine heading up the mountain for a perfect day of skiing, only to have the unthinkable happen—your gondola suddenly detaches and crashes to the ground. That’s exactly what went down at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort near Golden, B.C., sending shockwaves through the skiing community.
Early Monday morning, at around 9:20 a.m., a gondola cabin on the Golden Eagle Express fell to the ground while carrying several passengers. Fortunately, reports indicate that there were no serious injuries, but it was a terrifying experience for those inside. According to eyewitnesses, the cabin had just left the base station when it became detached and tumbled down. Resort officials, first responders, and ski patrol were on the scene immediately to assess the situation and tend to those affected.

Social media quickly exploded with images and firsthand accounts of the incident. Photos showed the fallen gondola lying on its side near the base, with a crowd of stunned onlookers gathered around. Some passengers were able to walk away with minor injuries, but the incident left many shaken.
Adding to the chaos, skiers and snowboarders who were in other gondola cabins found themselves stranded high above the slopes. One skier, Ryan Nichols, described the nerve-wracking experience of being suspended more than 100 feet in the air, watching as rescue crews worked tirelessly to evacuate those still trapped. In some cases, helicopters had to be used to airlift people to safety.
For now, the Golden Eagle Express gondola is shut down as an in-depth investigation is launched to determine the cause of the failure. Resort officials have called in experts from the manufacturer and safety authorities to inspect the lift and ensure this doesn’t happen again. The closure has effectively put the mountain on hold since the gondola is the only access point to the upper slopes, leaving much of the resort inaccessible.
This incident has sparked concerns about ski lift safety, especially given recent mishaps at other North American resorts. Skiers and snowboarders are now questioning the reliability of these systems, and many are hoping for swift action to prevent similar accidents in the future. For now, Kicking Horse remains closed, with the skiing community anxiously awaiting updates on when operations might resume.
