Shocking Hit-and-Run Near Canberra School Leaves Two Students Hospitalised
It’s a heartbreaking scene in Canberra today after a tragic hit-and-run outside St Edmund’s College left two school-aged children seriously injured. The incident, which unfolded on Canberra Avenue in Griffith, has shaken the local community, with parents, students, and bystanders left in shock.
The chaos began just after 9 AM when a stolen green Holden Commodore, originally taken from Queanbeyan, went on a reckless spree, hitting multiple vehicles before striking the two students near their school. The driver, showing complete disregard for the children’s safety, failed to stop and continued along Canberra Avenue for several hundred meters before eventually crashing outside St Christopher’s Cathedral in Manuka.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, where paramedics provided urgent medical attention to the injured students before transporting them to Canberra Hospital. Their condition remains serious, and their families are receiving support during this distressing time. Meanwhile, police swiftly took the alleged driver into custody and continue to investigate the full circumstances of the crash.
Understandably, the incident has deeply impacted students and staff at St Edmund’s College. The school has mobilized additional counselors to support those affected, holding a special assembly to inform students about the situation and provide guidance on seeking emotional support. Parents from the neighboring St Clare’s College were also reassured that all their students were accounted for and safe.
Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area as investigations continue. The incident has reignited concerns about vehicle theft and reckless driving in the area, with calls for stricter measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
As the Canberra community rallies around the victims and their families, many are left questioning how such a reckless act could occur on a quiet school morning. Our thoughts are with the injured students, their loved ones, and everyone affected by this senseless act of recklessness.
