Texas Senator John Cornyn Talks Fentanyl Crisis and Economic Concerns
Texas Senator John Cornyn recently sat down for an interview with KSAT to discuss some pressing issues that are on the minds of many Texans: the fentanyl crisis and the state of the economy. These topics are affecting families across the state, and Cornyn shared his insights on the measures being taken to address them.
One of the most alarming concerns is fentanyl, a synthetic opioid responsible for thousands of deaths in Texas alone. Since 2019, more than 7,000 Texans have lost their lives due to fentanyl poisoning, highlighting the urgency of addressing this crisis. In response, Cornyn has co-sponsored the HALT Fentanyl Act, which aims to classify fentanyl-related substances as Schedule I drugs, a category reserved for substances with high abuse potential and no accepted medical use.

Cornyn emphasized that this move is critical in combating the epidemic, stating, "I think it sends an important signal. And it’s also a predicate for law enforcement to be able to signal that this is the deadly drug that it really is." However, he acknowledged that legislation alone is not enough and that a multi-faceted approach is needed to save lives and prevent further tragedies.
Shifting to economic concerns, Cornyn addressed the growing anxiety among Texans regarding inflation, stock market fluctuations, and potential federal job cuts. While some economic analysts have raised the probability of a U.S. recession to 35%, Cornyn remains optimistic about Texas’ economic strength.
"Certainly not a recession here in Texas. Of course, we’ll continue to lead the nation when it comes to the economy," he stated. He pointed to Texas’ energy production, particularly in the Permian Basin, as a key factor in maintaining the state’s financial resilience. According to Cornyn, initiatives like American energy independence are vital in keeping gasoline prices low and ensuring a stable economy.
While uncertainties remain, Cornyn reassured Texans that economic cycles are natural and that the state’s strong foundation will help weather any downturns. "It’s hard to predict, but I’m personally optimistic," he concluded.
With fentanyl continuing to claim lives and economic concerns still looming, Cornyn’s insights shed light on the ongoing efforts to tackle these challenges. Texans will be watching closely to see how these issues unfold in the coming months.
