The Passing of a Legend: Lee Shau Kee, A Real Estate Tycoon, Dies at 97
Today, we bid farewell to one of Hong Kong’s most influential business figures, Lee Shau Kee, the founder of Henderson Land Development. At the age of 97, he passed away peacefully in the presence of his family this evening. His departure marks the end of an era for Hong Kong’s real estate industry and beyond.
Lee Shau Kee was more than just a businessman—he was a visionary. Starting from humble beginnings, he rose to become one of Asia’s wealthiest individuals, often referred to as the “Stock God of Asia” due to his sharp investment acumen. At his peak, his personal wealth exceeded 2,000 billion Hong Kong dollars, securing his place as the second-richest man in Hong Kong as of February 2025, according to Forbes.
Born in 1928 in Guangdong, China, Lee moved to Hong Kong in the 1940s. He co-founded the real estate firm Yong Tai in 1956 alongside business partners, including Kwok Tak-seng. Later, he established Henderson Land Development in 1976, which would go on to become a powerhouse in Hong Kong’s property market. His innovative approach, such as selling apartments with flexible payment plans, made homeownership more accessible and transformed the real estate landscape.

Despite his immense success, Lee faced challenges. During the 2008 financial crisis, his investment firm, Shau Kee Financial, suffered significant losses. Yet, he remained a respected figure, choosing to step back from public market commentary and focusing on long-term strategies.
In 2019, Lee officially retired, passing the leadership of his business empire to his sons, Peter Lee Ka-kit and Martin Lee Ka-shing. Even in retirement, his influence on the property sector remained undeniable.
His final days were spent at home, where he had been receiving long-term medical care. With doctors and caregivers by his side, he was surrounded by loved ones until his peaceful passing.
Lee Shau Kee’s legacy is not only in the skyscrapers and developments that shape Hong Kong’s skyline but also in his contributions to the financial world and philanthropy. His impact will be felt for generations to come.
Rest in peace, Mr. Lee Shau Kee. Your legacy will endure.
