36 Years Since Hillsborough – We Will Never Forget the 97
Today marks 36 years since one of the darkest days in football history—April 15, 1989—the Hillsborough disaster. It’s a day that’s etched in the hearts of Liverpool fans forever. Ninety-seven innocent men, women, and children lost their lives that afternoon during the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough Stadium. They went to support their beloved team, never knowing they wouldn't return home.
Every year, this date brings back a wave of grief, remembrance, and reflection—not just for the families and survivors, but for the entire football community. And this year, as always, Liverpool Football Club stands in unity and solemn tribute to those who were taken too soon. At 3:06pm, the precise moment the match was halted in 1989, the club observed a minute’s silence. Flags flew at half-mast, floral wreaths were laid at the Hillsborough Memorial at Anfield, and the club's retail store closed early in respect.

What happened on that day was a tragedy that no football supporter should ever experience. It wasn’t caused by the fans, and after a long fight for justice, that truth was finally recognised in April 2016 when an inquest jury ruled that all 97 victims were unlawfully killed. The determination, dignity, and strength shown by the families and survivors in the pursuit of truth and justice is nothing short of extraordinary. Their fight has been long, painful, and courageous—and it's one that has inspired people far beyond Merseyside.
This isn't just a moment to look back in sorrow—it’s a moment to honour the lives we lost. Every name, every face, every story matters. The memory of the 97 is not just alive in plaques and ceremonies, but in the hearts of those who chant their names, wear the crest with pride, and continue to demand fairness in the game and beyond.
Gone, but never forgotten. The 97 will always be with us. Always.
