5.8 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Delhi-NCR, Jammu & Kashmir, and Pakistan

On April 19, 2025, a powerful earthquake of magnitude 5.8 struck Afghanistan, sending tremors across neighboring regions, including Delhi-NCR, Jammu & Kashmir, and parts of Pakistan. The earthquake, confirmed by the National Center for Seismology, hit at 12:17 PM IST, with its epicenter located near the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border at a depth of 94 kilometers. Though the tremors were felt widely, there were no immediate reports of major damage or casualties in India.

Residents across Delhi-NCR and Jammu & Kashmir experienced unsettling shaking, with many reporting momentary panic. A resident in Srinagar described feeling the tremor while sitting in her office as her chair shook. Despite the nervous moments it triggered, authorities have assured that there is no cause for alarm, though they continue to monitor the situation closely.

Pakistan was also heavily affected by the seismic activity, which occurred earlier that day at 11:47 AM local time. The National Seismic Monitoring Centre of Pakistan confirmed a 5.9 magnitude earthquake, which had its epicenter near the same border region. The tremors sent waves through various cities including Islamabad, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, and several parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The earthquake caused considerable panic among residents, but fortunately, there have been no reports of fatalities or significant property damage.

This earthquake marks the second seismic event in the region within a week. Just the previous Saturday, a 5.5 magnitude earthquake had struck parts of Pakistan, including its capital. Given the region's vulnerability to earthquakes, the memories of the devastating 2005 earthquake, which claimed over 74,000 lives, remain fresh in the minds of many.

Seismic events like these are a reminder of the unpredictable nature of our planet, especially in regions that are geologically active, like South Asia. While the immediate impact of this earthquake has not led to widespread destruction, authorities continue to assess the situation and are prepared to respond to any developments. For now, the region braces for aftershocks as the geological activity in this area continues to be closely watched.
