Fast forward to February this year—after successful IVF and a carefully monitored pregnancy—Grace gave birth to her beautiful daughter, Amy Isabel, via a planned Caesarean section at Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital in London. Amy weighed just over two kilograms, and when Grace held her for the first time, she described it as “overwhelming” and “surreal.” I mean, imagine not even letting yourself dream of something for years, and then holding it in your arms. That moment is what Grace called “really wonderful.”

What makes this even more heartwarming is how Grace and her husband Angus chose to name their daughter. Amy, after the sister who gave her womb, and Isabel, after the lead surgeon, Isabel Quiroga. It’s a name filled with gratitude and history.

This isn’t just a personal milestone—it’s a national and even global medical achievement. The transplant surgery took a massive team of over 30 medical professionals and lasted 17 hours. Since Grace’s surgery, three more womb transplants have taken place in the UK using organs from deceased donors, with more on the horizon.

Grace’s journey wasn’t easy. Before the transplant, surrogacy and adoption were presented as options, but for her, carrying her own child was deeply important. She’d always had that mothering instinct, but for years, she had to bury it. To now have the chance to be a mother in the most literal, biological sense—thanks to her sister’s gift and science pushing boundaries—it’s just extraordinary.

And it’s not over yet. Grace and Angus still have embryos in storage, and they’re hopeful about welcoming a second child before the donated womb is eventually removed. Once that happens, she can stop taking the daily immunosuppressants that prevent her body from rejecting the organ.
