April's Cold Reminder—Winter Isn’t Quite Done With Us Yet
Hey everyone, so here’s the deal—just when we thought spring had fully arrived, April's reminding us that she’s still got some icy tricks up her sleeve. If you’ve been tempted to stash away those winter coats and heavy sweaters, you might want to hold off a little longer. There’s a reason the old saying goes, “Shed no thread 'til April is dead.” It might sound dramatic, but if you stepped outside lately, you probably felt exactly why that wisdom still holds.

We’re currently getting a fresh dose of cold air, straight out of Canada, and it’s settling in pretty quickly. Tonight is when things get serious—clear skies and almost no wind are going to let the cold just sit there and deepen. That combination sets the stage for frost—thick, widespread, and honestly, kind of nasty if you're an early riser or a gardener. And yes, there’s a freeze warning in effect for much of the area, with temperatures expected to dip into that 28 to 31-degree range. In some places, we’re even talking about a hard freeze—temps below 28 degrees for three hours or more.
If you're a gardener, this is your cue to take action—cover your plants or bring them in. Even though the calendar says spring, the growing season hasn’t technically started in some parts of the region. That's why a few northern tier counties aren't under the freeze warning officially—but don't be fooled. No matter where you are, if you're in Central Illinois, you're going to feel this chill. And if you’ve got an early commute tomorrow, plan some extra time to scrape that frost off your windshield. No garage? No carport? Better grab that ice scraper and maybe even a pair of gloves.
And while Tuesday will bring us some sunshine, don’t expect too much warmth just yet. Highs will hover around the 50s, and then rain moves in midweek. The silver lining? It looks like we’ll warm up toward the weekend with temps possibly reaching into the 70s by Sunday. So, hang in there. April is playing her usual weather games, but brighter—and warmer—days are just around the corner.
Until then, keep the winter gear close, and don’t trust the sun too much. April might be smiling, but she’s still a bit frosty.
