Exciting news for millions of families across the UK – Child Benefit payments are set to increase starting from April 7, 2025. This change, announced by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), means parents will receive additional financial support to help with the cost of raising children.
So, what does this mean in real terms? For the eldest or only child, the weekly payment will rise to £26.05, totaling £1,354.60 annually. For each additional child, the weekly payment will increase to £17.25, equating to £897 per year. This payment is typically deposited into a parent’s bank account every four weeks, ensuring consistent financial support.
The government has also made claiming and managing Child Benefit easier than ever before. The HMRC app provides a simple and secure way for parents to apply, update their details, add additional children, and even check their proof of entitlement. The app also notifies users once their claim has been processed, and payments can now be received in as little as three days.

More than 1.2 million parents have already used the digital service to claim Child Benefit since its introduction in May 2023. Over 87% of claims are now submitted online, showcasing the efficiency and convenience of the digital system.
Parents are encouraged to claim Child Benefit as soon as their baby is born, as claims can only be backdated for up to three months. To apply, parents will need to create an online HMRC account and provide necessary details, including the child’s birth or adoption certificate, their own National Insurance number, and bank account information.
For households where one parent earns between £60,000 and £80,000, the High Income Child Benefit Charge applies. Affected families can now choose to pay this charge directly through their PAYE tax code instead of filing a Self Assessment tax return, simplifying the process further.
Additionally, families who have previously opted out of receiving Child Benefit due to the High Income Charge can now opt back in quickly and easily via the HMRC app. Even if they choose not to receive payments, claiming Child Benefit ensures they continue receiving National Insurance credits, which count toward their State Pension.
This increase in Child Benefit payments reflects the government's commitment to supporting families with the rising cost of living. If you haven’t yet claimed, now is the perfect time to do so. Simply visit GOV.UK or download the HMRC app to get started. Every extra pound makes a difference, and this boost is set to provide much-needed financial relief to millions of parents across the UK.
