Delhi Capitals End 15-Year Chennai Drought with Commanding Win Over CSK
What a game we witnessed at the MA Chidambaram Stadium! It was the Delhi Capitals who finally broke a 15-year-long curse and walked away with a historic win against the Chennai Super Kings in their own backyard. This wasn’t just a match—it was a statement.
Delhi came into this clash riding the momentum of two back-to-back wins, and they didn’t disappoint. Opting to bat first, the Capitals put up a solid 183 for 6 in their 20 overs. And who else but KL Rahul to lead from the front? Calm, calculated, and classy—Rahul smashed a crucial 77 off 51 balls. Despite an early blow with Jake Fraser-McGurk falling in the very first over, Rahul stood tall. His partnership with Abhishek Porel (who chipped in with a quick 33) helped DC recover and lay the foundation for a competitive total.
CSK’s bowlers did try to pull things back. Khaleel Ahmed was sharp, delivering 2 for 25 in his quota, while Pathirana kept it tight at the death. But 183 was always going to be a stiff ask, especially the way DC were executing their bowling plans.

Then came the chase—and it never really felt like CSK were in control. Early wickets meant they were playing catch-up from the get-go. Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway, and skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad couldn’t find answers to the DC pace attack. Mitchell Starc and Mukesh Kumar turned up the heat, and suddenly, CSK found themselves needing 88 off the last 36 balls.
Even MS Dhoni, who remained unbeaten on 30 off 26, couldn’t turn things around. He did strike a six late in the game, sending the crowd into a frenzy, but it was too little, too late. The middle-order lacked intent, the run rate kept climbing, and eventually, CSK closed at 158 for 5—falling short by 25 runs.
The Capitals’ bowlers—especially young Vipraj Nigam—were outstanding. He picked up 2 for 27 and showed great composure under pressure. Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel kept things tight in the middle overs, and it was clear DC had come prepared for this battle.
With this win, Delhi not only extend their winning streak to three but also erase years of heartbreak at Chepauk. It’s a massive morale boost for Axar Patel and his boys, and KL Rahul’s form will be a huge positive moving forward.
For CSK, the loss will sting, particularly because it came at home and the chase lacked urgency. Questions might be raised about their middle-order approach, but with a long season ahead, they'll need to bounce back quickly.
All in all, a memorable night in Chennai—but for reasons CSK fans won’t be thrilled about.
