So, big news out of Atlanta—Easton Stick is officially a Falcon. That’s right, the former Los Angeles Chargers quarterback is heading to Flowery Branch as the Falcons continue to reshape their quarterback room. And while this move might not shake up headlines like a blockbuster trade, it’s an intriguing one, especially considering the current uncertainty surrounding veteran Kirk Cousins.

Stick, for those unfamiliar, isn’t just another arm. The guy holds the record as the winningest quarterback in FCS history, with a staggering 49-3 record at North Dakota State. That’s no small feat. He was selected by the Chargers in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft and had spent his entire professional career there until now. While his on-field action has been limited—he saw just one pass attempt in 2020—he got a real opportunity in 2023 when Justin Herbert was sidelined. In five appearances (four starts), Stick completed 63.8% of his passes for 1,129 yards, tossed three touchdowns, and had just one pick. Not bad for someone coming in cold off the bench.

Now he joins a QB room led by Michael Penix Jr., the Falcons’ first-rounder from last year and presumed starter for 2025. Backing Penix are Cousins—though his status is murky—and Emory Jones, another young talent. Stick is coming in primarily as a depth option, but don’t underestimate the value of his experience and resilience. With the team possibly exploring trade options for Cousins (pending his no-trade clause, of course), having someone like Stick could prove pivotal if the dominoes start to fall.

Head Coach Raheem Morris and the staff aren’t taking any chances. They want competition, they want security, and they want flexibility. Stick brings all three. Even if he’s not starting in Week 1, his presence in offseason workouts, OTAs, and minicamp will add a healthy dynamic to the room. And hey, if Cousins does end up getting moved, we might just see a real QB2 battle between Stick and Jones.

One thing’s for sure—the Falcons are preparing for every scenario. Adding Easton Stick is a quiet move on paper, but it might end up being a smart one when the season unfolds.
